Share your family’s story with Cornwall!

The Cornish Audio Visual Archive’s Narratives of the Family oral history project is currently recording family memories across Cornwall and we will be giving people from different cultural and ethnic groups the opportunity to make a contribution to Cornwall’s family tree!

Building on the growing interest in genealogy, this project seeks to explore the ways in which communities in Cornwall connect to the past through family storytelling. A team of supervised volunteers are exploring family customs and traditions that have been passed down through different generations. The Cornish Braids collection, which was principally funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, offers an ideal starting point for the study of kinship in relation to work, religion, politics, leisure, migration and social relationships. This valuable resource is being augmented and expanded by new video and sound recordings, particularly with other ethnic minorities living in Cornwall. Extracts and findings from the recordings will be disseminated through exhibitions, workshops, articles, CDs and the Internet. This study of family and identity will bring together different generations and ethnic communities throughout Cornwall with a public conference in Truro on Saturday 16 August 2008. Narratives of the Family is being developed by CAVA in partnership with the Cornwall Family History Society, Cornwall Centre, Cornwall Record Office along with Cornwall’s Equality & Diversity Service and the Cornwall Family History Society
