Welcome to the Cornish Audio Visual Archive!

CAVA was created by the Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter in partnership with the Cornwall Centre, Cornwall Record Office, College of St Mark & St John and the Rescorla Centre. Its activities are based on the core aims of:
  • Preserving audio-visual collections relating to Cornwall in a safe and secure environment.
  • Developing CAVA as a leading research and learning centre for oral history, film studies & performing arts.
  • Promoting the archive as a cultural resource for Cornwall and the Cornish overseas.
Audio and visual recordings provide a powerful yet fragile expression of cultural identity. Yet many of these valuable resources have remained disparate and have not been catalogued or made accessible to the wider public. CAVA seeks to harness the multimedia power of oral history, cultural memory, film studies, music and photography in order to create a greater understanding of Cornwall in the past and present. Central to its vision is the development of a ‘Living Archive’ linked to ongoing research and education programmes.

The archive also seeks to engage with other forms of cultural and historical work being conducted in Cornwall. This includes providing a platform for Cornish History, an online multimedia journal focusing on the study of the past and its relationship with the present, and the educational work and annual festival programme of the Rescorla Centre in mid-Cornwall. CAVA is also working with international scholars through the Celtic Education & Research Network.
